Oh, also, I saw Iain Banks at the Edinburgh Book Faire in 2005. It was very cool, but he's not very forthcoming about the details of his SF. He mainly wanted to crack jokes centered around his whiskey book...

I hear he likes his whiskey. If writing a whiskey book it what it takes to get him in the mood to write more Culture, then that's fine by me. :)

Hey, thanks for the Watch! Your stuff is cool; you've got a great imagination... If you want to link to video trailers, or see storyline or content descriptions of any of my stuff, be sure and take a look at my store: [link]
Enjoy.
PLUS, Iain Banks & AEON FLUX..? We are on the same team, friend. You've read MATTER, I guess. (My personal favorite.) And I was just talking to a friend who told me Banks has a newer one...

Thanks dude. You've got a great imagination too! Matter is great, but then so are all the others. The newer one is "surface detail". I freaked out when i saw it in a bookshop the other day then realised i'd already read it. My favourite might be Use of Weapons but maybe that's rose tinted glasses- i read it a long time ago.

Use Of Weapons is the favorite 'read' of one of my best friends, but we both found the ending (some kind of switcheroo, where the hero turns out to 'be' the villain, literally...)really unsatisfying. The ride is great though...
Yeah, I heard about SURFACE DETAIL. It's not classified a Culture book, right?

Surface Detail is definitely Culture. The only non Culture M Banks book i can think of is Against A Dark Background, which is probably a bit like Use of Weapons in being a bit dark but a good ride. I enjoyed it. If you're against unhappy endings then don't read Song of Stone. Even got me depressed.
